Well, from looking at me you probably wouldn’t think I would be your typical Krav Maga student – and I am not! The majority of Krav Maga students are male, but that has not put me off as I feel even though I am not as strong as them I can defend myself against them. Also, in real life situations it is more likely that I would be attacked by a man, so training with men prepares me for this. Women should not be intimidated by attending a Krav Maga class as it is easy to learn and it could potentially save their lives.
It all started just over 2 years ago. I booked a trip to go backpacking in South East Asia and as a female travelling alone; I felt I wanted to be able to defend myself if the situation arose. I looked at a number of different self defence classes and after doing research and watching numerous YouTube videos I decided to contact Jose at No Fear Academy. Originally, I was only going to do Krav Maga to learn a few self defence techniques before I went away. I soon became addicted and once I came back home I started training regularly. I now attend classes 2 to 3 times a week to Krav Maga and also the Kettlebells sessions with Cristina to improve my core strengh.
With thanks to Jose Silva for being a great instructor who motivates us all and trains us hard, two years on I am now a P2 and hopefully next year I will gain my P3. I love Jose’s Krav Maga classes – we are always learning new techniques that will help us defend ourselves in all situations and not just techniques that are assessed in the gradings. I find the classes very stress releasing and also they are a great fun work out.
In August this year a group of us from No Fear Academy went to Krav Island in Loch Lomond, Scotland. It was a two day training event that took us out of our regular training environment and into a weekend of outside intensive Krav Maga training. We trained on the shores of Loch Lomond after nightfall, on the rugged terrain of Inchcailloch and we also did some water training in the Loch. This has to be my best Krav Maga experience to date.
What I have learned from doing Krav Maga is that it doesn’t matter about your size or strength; it is all about technique and reaction times. It has also taught me how to react in threatening situations. As my friends from Krav Maga would agree I have managed to develop the perfect SCREAM to frighten off any would be attackers or stalkers! And as Jose says “don’t die alone”…so when being attacked I make as much noise as possible.
And don’t forget “ALWAYS SCREAM LIKE A GIRL BUT FIGHT LIKE A NINJA”!
